Everard's Ride ReviewI have read EVERY ONE of DWJ's books, and unfortunately, this is one of her best. I say unfortunately because they only ran a small edition and it's now ridiculously expensive. I bought it a few years ago when it was about $...still expensive but worth it (I have all her other books)
This collection includes the title story, Everard's Ride, which is a "traditional" fantasy story, a novella really, set in the english countryside. A boy and his sister get lost on a magical island near their home, and get caught up in political intrigue at a medieval court. This story is the centerpiece of the collection. The others are good, but shorter-- this one is really special--I found it thrilling, actually. I would say it's about a YA level.
Also included in this collection is "the True State of Affairs", set in Dalemark--but told in a completely different style from the Dalemark stories-very very dark--very much for the adult reader (I don't mean because of subject matter, rather, because of the mood and subtleties). It's written in the first person, by a woman imprisoned in a fortress due to a case of mistaken identity. It is different from anything else I have read by DWJ, and is absolutely perfectly done. (of course)
Just thought I'd write this in case there were any other DWJ fans wondering what's in this book. I liked it very much.Everard's Ride Overview
